Happy National BBQ Month!
Did you know the month of May is actually National BBQ Month?
Well if you’re a BBQ Freak like me– you probably did.
If you didn’t– not a problem, this is what I’m here for.
Finally, a holiday where you don’t have to run out the day before ( or in some cases the day of) and scrounge up a last minute gift for folks at your local fast food joint because its “Be Nice To Your Drive Through Person Day” or “National Fish Bowl Cleaner Outer Day”
As a matter of fact, you might be interested in some other- wise strange and funny holidays people and organizations celebrate…
In July you have National Baked Beans Month, National Ice Cream Month, National Tennis Month, Read An Almanac Month, Anti-Boredom Month, and Hitchhiking Month.
Now I can get into National Hitchhiking Month– especially with gas prices hovering just under $4.00 these days.
Did you know that August is National Catfish Month, National Golf Month, National Eye Exam Month, National Water Quality Month, Romance Awareness Month, Peach Month, and Foot Health Month.
National Foot Health Month?
In August…?
Now follow me on this…
Why in the world would they ( I don’t know who they are by the way, its all very mysterious) choose August as “National Foot Health Month?”
Imagine all those people walking into their foot care specialist– its a a hot and steamy August afternoon, you get some dude with foot rot walk in and plop his hot smelly feet on the examination table–yuck!
It seems to me you might want to partner this little known holiday with “National Air Freshener Day.”
Am I wrong in my thinking here?
Good, I didn’t thinks so.
Let’s keep going…
September is Classical Music Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, Fall Hat Month, International Square Dancing Month, National Blueberry Popsicle Month, National Courtesy Month, National Piano Month, Chicken Month, Baby Safety Month, Little League Month, Honey Month, Self Improvement Month, and Better Breakfast Month.
OK, so by now you get the picture. There are a ton of silly little holidays out there but National Barbecue Month isn’t one of them…
At least not for you and I–no sir re, not by a long shot.
So in honor of National Barbecue Month and without any further ado, I present to you–little known facts about the sport ( that’s right I called it a sport) you and I love–BBQ.
Did you know according to the National Barbecue Association ( NBBQ) nearly 8 out of 10 or (77%) of households own an outdoor barbecue grill or smoker?
In households of 4 or more people the number jumps to 89%.
However, people who read the National BBQ News ( Which I do and so should you) the number jumps to 98%. The other 2% are actually planning on purchasing a grill, smoker or barbecue pit within the next 30 days.
Wow, those are some pretty staggering numbers.
Now those numbers are skewed a bit at my place ( And I have a foot in my arse to prove it!)
You see, I have 2 smokers and 1 grill. I have a Charbroil Silver Smoker, a Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker and a Weber Kettle.
And here’s the thing–if it were not for the woman I dearly love — I’m sure those numbers would be doubled.
This doesn’t include all my chimney starters, coal shovels, Tongs, BBQ Mitts and so on.
So, what I’d like to know is how many smokers, grills or BBQ pits do you have and use.
How many pits or grills are too many?
Can you have too many?
So send me a note or tell me about your cookers in the comment area.
Better yet, send me your pictures of you using your cooker or pit. I want to see you in action!
So send in your comments and pictures and I’ll post them right away.
Until then, enjoy National BBQ Month and…
Now go smoke something, Bill Parlaman
